"Ski jumping has been taking place in Mengeš since time immemorial," claim the residents of Mengeš. Competitions were already held in the 1960s, when ski jumping events took place on the eastern side of Gobavica – at Zaloka.
Organized activities began with the founding general assembly on July 15, 1996, when the Ski Jumping Club Mengeš was established. Its founders, along with president Brane Šuštar, who led the club for 11 years, enthusiastically got to work. There were many challenges – securing funding for the operation of the Zaloke Jumping Center, attracting youth – these were the first steps. But soon, young jumpers began to win their first accolades in national competitions. Less than two years into its operation, the club was struck by tragedy. On January 31, 1998, a serious traffic accident occurred in Naklo, in which Franc Premk – president of the Planica competition organizing committee and director at the company Petrol – died, along with four young ski jumpers from the Ski Jumping Club Mengeš.
The accident did not dampen the enthusiasm of those involved in ski jumping; rather, it inspired them and the local community to continue their efforts. Local athletes achieved success in the Slovenian Championships, and the best among them participated in international competitions, reaching increasingly better results.
Over the years, the Zaloke Jumping Center completed the construction of a complex of three ski jumps, equipped with ceramic inruns and plastic landing surfaces, enabling year-round training. The official opening of the two smaller jumps, K15 and K20, took place in 2005, and K30 was put into operation in 2009.
The club attracts enthusiasts from Mengeš and the surrounding areas – mainly from the municipalities of Kamnik, Domžale, Komenda, Trzin, Vodice, and others. The Municipality of Mengeš has supported the club since its inception, but the support of local residents and businesses is also crucial. Athletes from the club have achieved the highest honors in ski jumping. Rok Benkovič from Kamnik became world champion on the normal hill in Oberstdorf on February 19, 2005. That same year, on his 19th birthday, he jumped 226 meters in Planica, setting the club and Slovenian record. The national record was later broken by Robert Kranjec in 2007, but Benkovič still holds the club record.
Another club alumnus, Anže Lanišek "Žaba" from Domžale, became the first Youth Olympic champion in Innsbruck in January 2012, and also secured second place with the team in the same event. Lanišek's senior achievements are also impressive: a bronze medal on the normal hill in 2021, a team gold on the large hill and a mixed team bronze in 2023, a team gold on the large hill and a mixed team silver in 2025, and a team gold in ski flying in 2022.
In August 2023, the complex was damaged by floodings, which destroyed the surface infrastructure and sports equipment storage facilities. In response, club members – including Anže Lanišek – organized clean-up actions to restore the venue to full functionality.
