History:

The Huhtiniemi ski jumping hill in Lappeenranta was one of the most important sports facilities in the South Karelia region. Built in 1961 as a K70 concrete structure, it was modernized in the 1970s. During the 1960s, evening competitions (“iltamäki”) were held there, featuring renowned Finnish jumpers such as Niilo Halonen (silver medalist at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck and bronze medalist at the 1962 World Championships in Zakopane), Antero Immonen, as well as international athletes. Halonen won the Finnish national championships on this hill in 1962, and the competition had an international character, including the participation of Josuke Eto from Japan, who later also competed in the Olympics. Another evening event in 1964 drew a record crowd, as it coincided with Veikko "Viki" Kankkonen’s Olympic victory in Innsbruck. Kankkonen was also present at Huhtiniemi in the late 1960s. The longest official jump ever made on the Huhtiniemi hill was 73.5 meters, achieved by impressive local jumper Raimo Tuovinen during a regional championship event in February 1988, organized by SVUL – South Karelia district. Tuovinen broke the previous record of 71.5 meters held by Risto Laakkonen, who at that time was competing in the Calgary Olympics as a member of the Finnish national team.
Previously, in 1946, a wooden K39 hill existed on the same site, with a record of 39 meters held by R. Puhakki. Both ski jumps were eventually dismantled – the wooden one in 1959, and the concrete one in 2002 after being seriously damaged by a storm.
Today, the former Huhtiniemi ski jumping area is used as a recreational zone. It features a 3.5 km illuminated ski trail open to both residents and tourists. In addition, the area serves as a venue for various outdoor events, including festivals and sports competitions.
