History:
The Silver Spruce Ski Club was formed by three Colorado Springs residents, Clarence Coil, Doug Shafer, and John Fowler in 1929. They established a skiing area in Teller County in the region of 4.301 m high Pikes Peak, just south of the historical town of Edlowe, which was situated on the railway line between Divide and Woodland Park. First, the "Suicide Hill" ski jump was built at Suicide Gulch in summer of 1929. In the following year, probably a better ski jumping facility was set up near Silver Spruce / Merriman Ranch, which allowed jumps of more than 30 meters. A smaller hill and a toboggan run were also added there. Regional ski jumping competitions drew crowds from Colorado Springs and even Denver. In 1936, the club moved its activities to the slopes of Glen Cove at Pikes Peak, where the first ski jumping competition supposed to have taken place on a temporary ski jump already in 1924.
