History:
The Monte Kaolino at Hirschau in Upper Palatinate is an around 110 meter high sand hill which includes meanwhile 32m tons of quartz sand which is a coproduct of kaolin mining and was banked up a sand hill.
Already in early 1950's first attempts to ski on the quartz sand were made and finally in 1957 the Amberg Kaolin Works set up a rope tow, changing and showering rooms for sand skiers on the southern side of the mountain. Additionally a 30 meter ski jumping hill was constructed and inspected by ski jumping hill architect Heini Klopfer from Oberstdorf in July 1957. Already after a few years it was deconstructed, because the danger of falls and injuries coming from them was too risky.
Nevertheless annual professional sand-ski and snowboard events up to European and World Championships still attract a lot of visitors.
For ski jumpers new plastic covered hills were set up at Kalvarienberg in 1970 and even used as a training center of young ski jumpers from Upper Palatinate and Northern Franconia. But already in 1976 interest in ski jumping decreased and the ski club focused more and more on cross-country skiing. There even many high class athletes were attracted by the club and gained national and international titles.
