History:

According to the chronology of skiing history in Southern California, the first ski competition on Mount San Antonio (Mount Baldy) took place on January 16, 1922. In 1935, members of the Sierra Club built a ski hut at the base of Baldy Bowl, which served as a base for skiers and climbers. This hut was rebuilt after a fire in 1936 and still exists today. The Mount Baldy ski resort began operating in 1952 and offers 26 ski runs covering a total of 800 acres.
In 1956, the first summer ski jumping competition was held on a small plastic-covered (matted) hill. Three years later, a permanent structure was erected. In 1960, Alf Engen (father) and Alan Engen (son) performed there, presenting a show of double jumps.
Alf Engen, who emigrated from Norway at the age of 20, played a key role in the development of skiing in the western United States. He was an eight-time U.S. ski jumping champion, won Canadian championships, and coached the U.S. Olympic team in 1948. His son, Alan K. Engen, continued the family’s sporting tradition, becoming a distinguished skier, instructor, and skiing historian.
