The first ski jumps in the Gibswil area were built in the mid-1980s in Sennweid, where small training hills for children and juniors (K14 and K28, rebuilt in 1997) were constructed. In the region there had also been a larger jumping complex on Mount Bachtel (K62 and K48), used by the local clubs SC am Bachtel and SC Hinwil, but it was dismantled in 2003. To preserve the ski jumping tradition in the Zürcher Oberland, a project was launched to build a new, year-round jumping hill in the Fischenthaler Boden valley.
In 2005, the cooperative “Regionales Skisprungzentrum Zürcher Oberland” (GRSZO) was founded, which financed the construction of the new 60-metre Bachtelblick-Schanze (K60/HS66) with a total cost of about CHF 2.25 million. The facility, equipped with plastic mattings and floodlights, was officially opened on 1 July 2006, with Swiss national team member Andreas Küttel attending the ceremony and making one of the inaugural jumps.
Since its opening, the Gibswil complex – consisting of three hills (HS15, HS25 and HS67) – has been in continuous use. In the following years, numerous national competitions were held here, including the annual Bachtelcup, rounds of the Helvetia Nordic Trophy, and the Swiss Junior Championships (among others in 2022). The venue plays an important training role for the clubs SC am Bachtel, SC Hinwil and the Nordische Trainingsgemeinschaft, and since 2024 it has been officially recognised as the Regional Training Centre of Swiss-Ski (RLZ Bachtelblick).
In October 2023, Gibswil hosted for the first time the international OPA Games (Spiele der Alpenländer), featuring more than 120 young athletes from seven countries. During this event, Slovenian jumper Tej Logar set the current hill record of 68.5 m.
Among the previous record holders of the Bachtelblick-Schanze were Tobias Birchler, Luca Egloff, Andreas Schuler and Mario Anderegg, while Rea Kindlimann and Sina Arnet held the women’s records. The Olympic athlete Dominik Peter, who began his ski jumping career in Gibswil, is also closely associated with the Fischenthal region and the hill complex.
Today, the Gibswil – Fischenthaler Boden complex remains one of the two main training centres for young ski jumpers in Switzerland and regularly hosts both national and international competitions, playing a key role in the development of Swiss ski jumping.
