The Stotzhalten ski jumping hill in Grindelwald was one of the most distinctive winter sports facilities in the center of the village. Although it was built in 1955 by Ski-Club Grindelwald, the ski jumping tradition at this site is much older. As early as 1905–1906, a small ski jump existed in the Stotzhalten area, where local jumps and training sessions were held, making it one of the first facilities of its kind in Grindelwald. In 1907, the Eigerschanze on Trychelegg was added for the Great Swiss Ski Championships.
The first competition on the newly built Stotzhalten hill took place in February 1956 and was held for junior athletes. Over the following decades, Stotzhalten became an important venue for the activities of the local Ski-Club Grindelwald. Training sessions and competitions were held regularly, and evening or nighttime jumps under artificial lighting were particularly popular. On Friday evenings the hill turned into a stage for local events and exhibitions, attracting both residents and tourists spending their holidays in Grindelwald. As late as the mid-1980s, regular Thursday training sessions were still held here, confirming that the facility continued to play a meaningful role in the club’s daily life. Stotzhalten was also one of the stops of the Berner Oberland Springer Tour, a youth competition circuit covering regional ski jumps in the canton of Bern.
The hill remained in operation at least until the 1990s, after which it was abandoned and eventually dismantled.
