The Sv. Frančišek ski jumping hill above Ribnica is a complex located right next to the chapel of St. Francis in Sajevac. For most of its active history it consisted of two hills – a smaller one of around twenty metres and a larger one of around forty metres. The facility was built in the mid-1950s as part of a community initiative to develop sports infrastructure in Ribnica. Local chronicles from that period describe how the TVD Partizan Ribnica association, alongside the construction of a new stadium, initiated the building of a ski jump at Frančišek, capable of accommodating jumps of around thirty metres. The project was overseen by a specially appointed committee.
After completion, the hill became one of the few places for ski jumping in this part of Slovenia. For decades it served the local youth and the sports club from Ribnica, and smaller regional competitions were held there.
A new chapter in its history began in the 2000s, when it became part of a series of amateur competitions in southern Slovenia. In the 2005/2006 season the facility was already equipped with lighting and functioned as a training hill. In February 2006 a night competition was held there as part of the Krpanov pokal tournament, attracting both young athletes and experienced amateur jumpers. Reports from the event highlighted the exceptionally steep inrun of the larger hill and the lively atmosphere of the night contest, with torches set along the landing slope and a large audience. Among the participants were jumpers who had competed on large hills in Planica, as well as very young athletes for whom Ribnica was one of their first competition venues.
The last major event was organised in February 2010. After several years’ break, the SK Ribnica club once again prepared a competition on both hills, gathering more than fifty participants from various parts of Slovenia. Competitors jumped in many age categories, on both ski jumping and alpine skis, and the contest received broad local coverage. Organisers pointed out the difficult preparations caused by weather conditions, but the event itself was successful, combining sporting rivalry with elements of fun – including a longest-jump contest with an unusual prize in the form of an enormous salami.
After 2010 activity on the hill gradually declined. Although it is now formally considered inactive, the earth profiles of both hills remain clearly visible in the landscape, and in recent years there have been mentions of local residents still maintaining their basic shape.
