Skakalni center POK is a youth ski jumping complex located on the Gora mountain plateau, in the area of the villages of Otlica and Kovk in the Municipality of Ajdovščina, high above the Vipava Valley (Vipavska dolina). It is the first fully developed ski jumping facility in the Primorska region and serves as the main training base of the ski jumping club POK (Predmeja–Otlica–Kovk). The complex comprises four ski jumps measuring 7, 15, 25 and 35 metres, prepared for summer training on plastic mattings as well as winter jumping on snow. The establishment of the centre continues more than sixty years of ski jumping tradition on Gora — as early as 1957, a club operated in Predmeja and was regarded as one of the most active in Slovenia. Among its athletes was Stanko Velikonja, a member of the Yugoslav national team in the 1970s and the author of the historic Primorska record of 154 metres.
After a period of inactivity, ski jumping on Gora was revived in 2013, when Zlatko Krivec, a local enthusiast from the hamlet of Petrgaluc near Otlica, built a small 10-metre snow hill on his own. The first competition held there, described by the local media as a “mini Planica”, brought together young ski jumpers and former athletes of the region. Shortly afterwards, a plastic-covered K12 hill called “U Petrgaluci” was constructed, where a record of 11.5 metres was established. This initiative became the driving force behind the creation of the POK Ski Jumping Club (Predmeja–Otlica–Kovk), which set the goal of building a modern ski jumping centre.
The project of the Kovk centre began in 2015–2016. A steep slope below the peak of Sinji Vrh was chosen. The hill profiles were designed by Slovenian expert Oto Giacomelli, while the architectural concept was prepared by Andrej Čopič. Other clubs also contributed — Triglav Kranj provided used ceramic inrun tracks from its own ski jumps, and the plastic matting for the landing hills was obtained second-hand but in excellent condition. Equally crucial was the enormous volunteer work: athletes, club members and local residents spent years clearing damaged forest, carrying out earthworks, building an access road and installing technical infrastructure. The project received strong support from the Municipality of Ajdovščina, which co-financed the investment with around 150,000 euros, while the total cost is estimated at roughly 260,000 euros.
The main earthworks were completed in 2017. In 2019, the advanced stage of construction was documented photographically, and at the end of June 2020 the largest hill — corresponding approximately to K35 — was used for summer training for the first time. The official opening of the complex took place on 21 August 2022 during a children’s interclub competition involving young jumpers from several Slovenian clubs. The following years brought further improvements and finishing works, continued until around 2024.
Skakalni center POK quickly became an important youth training facility in western Slovenia. A group of children and cadets train there regularly, and the club is integrated into the system of the Ski Association of Slovenia (Smučarska zveza Slovenije). The younger categories are coached by Mitja Velikonja, one of the main organisers of the project, while the older groups are trained by Danilo Pudgar, a former Olympian from Sapporo 1972. In the following seasons, POK athletes achieved their first successes in regional and national competitions.
In 2023, during an interclub competition on the largest hill, a hill record of 39 metres was set and confirmed by the local press. In 2024, the centre hosted another interclub event with around 70 participants from Slovenian clubs as well as teams from Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In August 2025, the sixth edition of the Pokal Ajdovščine competition was held, attracting around 60 jumpers, including athletes from Croatia. The winner was the home jumper Mark Štrancar, and the POK team also won the team classification.
Skakalni center POK is closely associated with several key figures: the club president Igor Polanc, coach and organiser Mitja Velikonja, former Olympian Danilo Pudgar, as well as historical local ski jumping personalities such as Stanko Velikonja and Zlatko Krivec.
