History:

At today called Nizhny Novgorod (former Gorky) the first 30 meter ski jumping hill was set up in 1955. In 1958 the ski jumping complex at Volga with several jumps could be opened. In 1973 the 110 meter ski jump was constructed.
For the 50th anniversary of ski jumping at Nizhny Novgorod in 2008 the largest jump had to be closed due to safety reasons. The inrun tower of K110 was then demolished, while the smaller jumps were equipped with new plastic mattings.
There was an architectural competition about the reconstruction of the whole ski jumping center in 2008/2009 where WilkinsonEyre.Architects handed in the draft of a winter sports complex with a K125 and 4 additional hills, indoor ski tracks, cross-country trails and a swimming center. The sketches of company Malojer from Innsbruck were more functional with a conversion of recent jumps into K125, K95 and further training hills and were finally supposed to be realized. After a two year standstill the realization of the project was finally decided on in summer 2011 and the tendering for the construction works worth around 2.4 billion Rubels (60m Euro) ends by end of February 2012. But so far the necessary financial funds could not be afforded yet within the regional budget and in August 2013 it became public that regional authorities want to apply for state funds instead. Thus the construction was delayed for a couple of years.
In April 2019, the Russian ski federation announced the comeback of this project. "If we take the history of ski jumping in the city into account, it was about time this happens. We will start building a K60 ski jump and hope for a positive decision towards funding and building more and also bigger ski jumps in 2020 - as soon as the construction of the Medium Hill is finished, Head of Region, Gleb Nikitin, said. Nevertheless, building those kind of ski jumping hills only would make sense as long as they would be used by the national teams in order to prepare for international competitions. "Only looking at the level of ski jumping in the region, the construction of these hills would not be justified", he added.

Laut dem Artikel ``Schanzenanlage in Nizhniy Novgorod wird umgebaut`` müssten die Schanzen bereits seit Ende letzten Jahres als K125, K95, K60 und 2 noch kleinere Schanzen im Bau sein.

Pavel Karelin [*]

W okolicach Niżnego Nowogrodu w wypadku samochodowym zginął rosyjski skoczek Paweł Karelin. Wielka strata dla całego świata skoków narciarskich. Będzie nam go brakowało. [*]
