In the upper part of the Maridalen valley, near the Sørbråten farm and the parking area at Mobekken, there were several small ski jumps used by local skiers already before World War II. After the war, the Sørbråten IL sports club began constructing a larger, more modern hill on the slope above Mobekken. The facility was named Tjernbakken, after a nearby forest lake.
Construction was completed in 1952, with about 6,000 hours of volunteer work invested in the project. The tall wooden inrun tower (about 12–15 m high) was strongly supported with steel cables, and the Aker municipality contributed 11,500 Norwegian kroner to the project.
Tjernbakken became the largest ski jump in this part of Maridalen. At least one official competition was held there – around 1955, with nearly a hundred participants; local jumper Bjørn Hammer finished in second place. Witnesses recall jumps reaching about 45 m, although no official hill record has been confirmed.
Soon after it was completed, interest in ski jumping within the club declined, and following the Bækkelagsbakken accident in 1960, the city authorities recommended dismantling large wooden inruns – Tjernbakken was also taken down at that time.
Traces of foundations and the hill profile remain visible in the terrain today, above Greveveien road and the Mobekken parking area.
