The Ullernbakken ski jump was one of the most important ski jumping hills in western Oslo. It was built in 1910 by Ullern Skiklubb and served for training and national-level competitions.
In 1910 the first landsrenn (national competition) in Ullern was held here, and during the 1920s and 1930s several editions of the Ullernrendet competition took place. On 8 February 1931, sisters Nora and Torborg Strømstad reportedly made exhibition jumps of 30 m and 24 m, opening the event at Ullernbakken.
In 1937, Hans Arnold Beck set a hill record of 56.5 m, which was improved in 1946 to 57.0 m by Thorleif Schjelderup. Schjelderup was one of Norway’s leading ski jumpers of the 1940s, representing IL Heming from Oslo. In 1948 he won the Olympic bronze medal in St. Moritz, sharing a historic all-Norwegian podium with Petter Hugsted and Birger Ruud. After ending his active career, he became coach of the Norwegian and Italian national teams and later a well-known writer, photographer and environmentalist. He authored numerous books about ski jumping and nature.
The hill remained in use until the late 1950s, when it was dismantled. After the club mergers Ullern SK → Lilleaker IF → Ullern IF, the former hill site was built over and all visible traces disappeared.
