History:

The Akakura ski jumping hill in Myōkō Kogen (Niigata Prefecture) is a year-round complex consisting of two facilities – a normal hill (HS100/K90) and a medium hill (HS68/K60) – located on the slopes of the Akakura Onsen Ski Area. It was built in 2001 as part of preparations for the winter segment of the 57th National Sports Festival, “2002 Niigata Myōkō Kokutai,” which hosted ski jumping and Nordic combined events. Its sporting inauguration took place in September 2001 during the 1st Myōkō Kōgen Summer Jump, where Masahiko Harada set the first hill record of 95.5 m. Over the following years the record was improved several times eventually surpassing the 100-metre mark; the current records are 102 m for men (Ryōta Yamamoto, 2023) and 103.5 m for women (Sara Takanashi, 2017). Akakura quickly became one of the key venues of Japan’s ski jumping infrastructure. It annually hosts the Myōkō Summer Jump – an A-class competition featuring the top Japanese athletes – as well as numerous junior events, school championships, Kokutai qualifiers, and regional tournaments. Start lists regularly include leading names such as Noriaki Kasai, Sara Takanashi, Yukiya Satō, Ryōyū and Junshirō Kobayashi, Taku Takeuchi, Daiki Itō, Ryōta Yamamoto, Reruhi Shimizu, and many others. The hill is equipped with plastic matting, a chairlift, start and judging buildings, service facilities, and snowmaking and sprinkling systems, enabling year-round training and competition. It serves as an important training centre for clubs from Niigata and surrounding regions, a development site for young athletes, and a venue where successive generations of Japanese jumpers regularly meet.
