The ski jumping hill was built on the slopes of Mount Kamisunagawadake above the mining town of Kamisunagawa in the Sorachi subprefecture on Hokkaido. Its origins date back to 1928: historical sources state that in December of that year the Mitsui Sunagawa coal mine, together with a local lumber company, completed the company’s ski jumping facility in Kamisunagawa and held its ceremonial opening. The hill was one of many sports facilities financed by the mine for its employees and their families.
In later years, it operated in the immediate vicinity of the Kamisunagawadake Kokusai Ski Area (active from 1971 to 2007) and served mainly for local competitions and training. After the ski area closed, the facility quickly fell into disrepair. Today, only remnants of the take-off and parts of the collapsed judges’ tower can be seen on the overgrown slope.
