The Alte Ruhl complex is located above the town of Ruhla, along the road toward Bad Liebenstein/Brotterode, in the immediate vicinity of the Rennsteig ridge and the entrance to the Thuringian Forest Nature Park (Naturpark Thüringer Wald). Ski jumping traditions in Ruhla date back to 1925, when the first ski jump was built in the Lappengrund valley; as early as 1931 it hosted an international team competition with athletes from Austria, Norway, and clubs from Hesse and Thuringia. In 1959, the Lappengrund facility was replaced by a new complex built on the slopes of the former settlement of Alte Ruhl, from which the current name of the ski jumps is derived.
Today, the complex consists of five ski jumps: the small K5/K6, K10, and K17 hills, the medium-sized Hans-Heß-Schanze K37, and the larger Jugendschanze K57 (HS 60). The smaller hills and the Hans-Heß-Schanze are covered with plastic matting and equipped with modern stainless-steel or ceramic inrun tracks, with a platter lift providing access to the top—features that enable intensive year-round training for children and youth. The Jugendschanze K57 has retained its original winter character and, with sufficient snow, has been used for training and competitions; however, it is currently not in regular, ongoing use. The K57 hill record is 62.5 m, set by Toni Schlott (previously 61.5 m by Ralf Gebstedt), while on the Hans-Heß-Schanze K37 the record is 42.0 m by Frederik Jäger, and among women 39.0 m by Cindy Haasch (2017).
Numerous accomplished athletes are closely associated with the Ruhla winter sports centre, having taken their first steps on skis here or trained with the local club. Notable names include ski jumper Dieter Neuendorf, world vice-champion and Holmenkollen winner; Nordic combined skier Marko Baacke, world champion in Lahti 2001; cross-country skier Ron Spanuth, world championship bronze medallist; and ski jumper Juliane Seyfarth, multiple world champion and one of the pioneers of women’s ski jumping in Germany. Thanks to athletes like these, Alte Ruhl is regarded as an important site on Thuringia’s sports map.
In the 21st century, the Alte Ruhl complex remains a very active venue for both winter and summer sports. Regular youth competitions are held on the plastic-covered hills, especially the Thüringer Schülercup in ski jumping and Nordic combined, along with numerous club events. A fixed fixture in the regional calendar is the Ruhlaer Abendsprunglauf—an evening ski jumping competition under floodlights, attracting young athletes from across Thuringia. Beyond the traditional winter season, the venue is lively in summer as well: it hosts Mattenspringen (summer jumping events), children’s promotional activities, and Nordic combined competitions with roller-ski races in nearby Seebach.
Directly adjacent to the ski jumps is the DSV-certified “nordic aktiv Langlaufzentrum Alte Ruhl – Glasbach,” featuring an illuminated training loop for cross-country skiing, technique information boards, and a network of trails leading toward the Rennsteig. The area also serves as the venue for large participation running events, such as the Ruhlaer Frühjahrscross, which attracts several hundred competitors across multiple age categories. Thanks to its combination of ski jumping, cross-country skiing, and hiking infrastructure, Alte Ruhl today fulfils a dual role: both as the modern sports training centre of WSC 07 Ruhla and as a popular gateway to the Thuringian Forest Nature Park for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts.
