At Neustadt am Rennsteig, now a district of the city of Großbreitenbach, the winter sports enthusiasts of the club BSG Chemie already wanted to build their own ski jumping hill since 1960's. Lead by the chairman of the BSG Volker Harnisch, who was also the main architect of the ski jump, the planning of the construction of a new ski jump had started in 1971. Works were carried out in summer 1972 as part of the NAW scheme (Nationales Aufbauwerk) and on October 7, 1972, the plastic covered ski jumping hill at "Großer Stein" was inaugurated.
After the completion of the ski jump, youth development of the club was continuously improved. Around 1980 another smaller ski jump was set up and district-level competitions and spartakiads of Ilmenau district were then organized regularly. The ski club was promoted to the status of a nordic training center, at which children up to the age of 12 years were trained. The hill record of 23 meters was set up by a Polish child during an international winter competition.
After the political turnover in 1990 activities around the hill stopped and it was dismantled in 1995.
