History:

The Hasselbachschanzen complex in Wippra is one of the most important and oldest ski jumping centres in Saxony-Anhalt. Its history dates back to the late 1950s, when—after the demolition of the “Glück-Auf” hill in Mansfeld—the local winter sports club decided to build a new facility in the Hasselbach Valley. Construction began in 1957 based on a design by Hönl from Gräfenhainichen and had an almost pioneering character: a wide strip of forest was cleared, numerous rock blasts were carried out, and the stream was routed under the landing slope in a buried pipe. Key roles in this work were played by Gerhard Segnitz, Heinz Kühne, Willi Modesti and Günther Dammann, who consulted the construction with renowned coach Hans Renner from Oberhof. The ski jump was officially opened in January 1963, and the first record—33 metres—was set by Peter Ott.
Just a year later, the hill was covered with plastic mats, enabling year-round training. In October 1964, the first summer competition was held, although a reconstruction of the overly steep landing slope soon became necessary. Further modernisations followed in the 1970s, and in 1975 a smaller K15 hill was opened. In the following decade, the mats and surface elements were replaced, and by the late 1990s the entire complex had been refurbished with porcelain inrun tracks and lighting. During this period, Wippra hosted many regional competitions, and successive records were set on the modernised hill—among them jumps by Tobias Ostermann exceeding 44 and 45 metres.
A breakthrough stage came between 2009 and 2011, when the entire complex was thoroughly rebuilt and adapted to modern standards. Three hills were created: the main K45, the youth hill K15, and the smallest K5–6 for children. In 2011, the first major post-modernisation event—the open regional championships—was held on the new facilities. Since then, Wippra has regularly hosted spring and autumn competitions and the Saxony-Anhalt championships. Several records have been set on the K45 hill, including the longest—50 metres—achieved by Paul Winter in 2014. Among the women’s record holders are also Pauline Laue and Julina Kreibich.
Wippra has entered a new era as an important training centre. Groups of children and young athletes train here regularly under the guidance of local coaches, and the SFS Wippra club organises both competitions and numerous community events. The only significant interruption came during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020, when training was suspended. After activities resumed, the complex quickly returned to full operation, remaining an active and well-maintained venue hosting both sporting events and local gatherings, including the annual Herbst- and Frühjahrssprunglauf competitions and various sports festivals.
