History:

The ski jump near Harzhaus on the northern outskirts of Benneckenstein was built in 1958 as a club facility of WSV Benneckenstein. From 1967 until the political changes of 1989/1990, winter district Spartakiads in Nordic disciplines were regularly held here, making the complex an important training venue for young athletes in the former GDR. Initially, three jumps existed at the site, with K-points of K28, K15 and K4, constructed as small hills with simple infrastructure. Over time, the hill was named after Kurt Heyder, a long-time winter sports coach from Benneckenstein who trained generations of local athletes over several decades.
Due to recurring snow problems and the desire to revive sporting activity, a fundraising campaign for modernization and plastic covering began in 2008. With support from residents and local sponsors, the profile of the largest hill was rebuilt to K30 in 2009, and the medium hill to K12, both equipped with a surface allowing summer jumping. The official opening of the renovated facilities took place on 1 August 2009. In the years that followed, the complex once again became lively: open city championships in ski jumping, night events, competitions for children and youth, as well as Nordic combined contests were held here. During this period, the most important records were also set: a winter record of 32.5 metres on the K30, a summer record of 34 metres, and a women’s record of 26 metres.
Around 2012, sports activity at the facility began to decline noticeably. Over time, competitions were discontinued, and the hills gradually fell into disrepair—first becoming overgrown, and later suffering damage caused by weather and a lack of regular maintenance. In 2020, WSV Benneckenstein organised a community work action during which buildings were cleaned, inruns repaired, plastic mats restored and vegetation removed. Although this raised hopes of gradually restoring the hill for training, the subsequent years did not bring a return to regular sporting use. The absence of supervision also led to increasing vandalism, further complicating any future reactivation of the ski jumps.
Today, the Kurt-Heyder-Schanze complex is effectively abandoned, although the structures of the hills still stand. Recent photographs show overgrown inruns, damaged boards and plastic mats, as well as deserted functional buildings.
