At Kuhberg in Scharfenstein the Birkenschanze existed already since 1949, which got its name from the material used for the construction (birches) and had been jumped on until the end of 1950’s.
But then completely new youth hill was built up at the same place. In 1973 it was covered with plastic mattings. The small 10 meter plastic covered hill was constructed two years later and was very necessary and useful for the education of youngest jumpers.
Intrinsically tied with these jumps was from the beginning on the name Erich Hildebrandt. He was chief organizer of the planning and construction of the jumps, as well as later conversions and had coached the youth jumpers of Scharfenstein for many years. Until the end of 1980’s his son was long lasting coach at the jump. Due to a lack of young jumpers the ski jumping activities ended very abruptly after the political turnover in 1990, the ski jumps, whose condition decrease constantly, were dismantled within a job-creating measure in summer 1996.
