History:

The Lampsinmäki ski jump in Ruokolahti was located on a steep slope above the small lake Lampsiinlampi, right next to the church hill in the centre of the village. The hill was built in the mid-1930s, during a period of rapid development of Finnish ski jumps constructed by Suojeluskunta organisations. Different sources give 1933 or 1936 as the year of construction, but all agree that Lampsinmäki was established by the local Ruokolahden Suojeluskunta. After Suojeluskunta was dissolved in 1944, the ski jump was taken over by the sports club Ruokolahden Raju, which carried out the first major renovation a few years later. In the second half of the 1950s the old wooden structure was deemed too deteriorated and was dismantled.
In the winter of 1964/65 the municipality of Ruokolahti supported the reconstruction of the ski jump at Lampsinmäki. The new landing slope was laid out slightly differently than before the war – the landing area was now situated to the left of the former line, on the eastern side of Lampsiinlampi. According to the local historical society, the rebuilt hill allowed jumps of up to around 37 metres, but interest in ski jumping in Ruokolahti, although initially strong, faded rather quickly and the hill was used only occasionally.
According to the data from Kaakkois-Suomen hyppyrimäet 1930–2020, the record of the K25 hill was 28.5 metres, shared by two jumpers – Sihvonen and K. Heino. The same publication notes that the municipality of Ruokolahti also had smaller ski jumps at Ahjärvi (Kukkomäki) and on the island of Äitsaari, and that results from competitions held on these local hills in 1959 have been preserved. Local sources also recount an anecdote about Einari Suikkanen, who during the opening competition of the new hill descended the inrun wearing an unbuttoned winter coat that acted like wings – the “ulster jump” was long and successful, although not measured, and became the last jump of his career.
The Lampsinmäki ski jump was finally dismantled in 1982. Today no visible structures remain, and the site is part of the “Eukkojen polku” historical and nature trail, which leads around the church hill and Lake Lampsiinlampi. One of the information boards along the path is dedicated to the former ski jump, recalling the time when Ruokolahti had its own place for practising ski jumping.
