History:

The Vuolteen ski jumping hill in the town of Lemi was an important sports center in the region during the 1930s and 1950s. Thanks to local community initiatives, two ski jumps were built there. The old hill (K30), constructed in 1937 by the SK-järjestö organization, was located next to the sports field in Vuolteen. The hill record was 30.5 meters, set by Jussi Suomalainen and Pentti Ryöppy. Interestingly, Jussi Suomalainen was known not only as a jumper but also as a television news presenter. After the construction of the new hill, the old one was used as a training facility for juniors.
The new hill (K40) was erected at the beginning of 1949 on land owned by Heikki Hovi and later modernized in 1958. Its record stood at 43 meters and was held by Heikki Hovi and Esko Iivonen. The hill hosted many national ski competitions, and Heikki Hovi was remembered as the most renowned local jumper, considered one of the top ski jumpers in the Etelä-Karjala region during the 1950s. He was known for his daring jumping style, often taking risks that sometimes led to crashes.
Both hills were dismantled in the 1970s due to their deteriorating technical condition. Nevertheless, their history remains an important part of Lemi’s sporting heritage.
