A great jump forward for the Nordic Concept Vorarlberg
on 2012-06-09
The building decision for the "Montafon ski jumping center" located in Austrian Tschagguns, where the EYOF 2015 will be hosted, was now made. Additionally new junior hills shall be build at Andelsbuch.
Building decision for Montafon ski jumping center was made
As a centerpiece of the "Nordic Concept" and probabaly the most spectacular sports site for the European Youth Olympic Festival 2015 (EYOF) a modern ski jumping facility is planned at Tschagguns at the site of former Zelfenschanze. The state government of Vorarlberg now made the final decision for the construction of the around 12 million Euro expensive project.
For Governor Markus Wallner state sports minister Siegi Stemer this means not only one more step, but literally a great "jump" towards the realization of the Nordic Concept and the preparation of the European Youth Olympic Festival at Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein.
For Wallner the Nordic Concept is "the essential foundation for Vorarlberg to tie in with its big tradition in Nordic skiing, and a huge chance for valuable additional incentives for tourism." The importance of EYOF 2015 for the whole region is out of doubt for Wallner, too: "It is even Euope's biggest multi-sports event for young athletes and a primary stage to the Olympic Games. We want to create an unforgetable experience for all participants as well as spectators and guests from all over Europe at all our sports sites."
First ski jumps already in winter 2013-2014
Wallner comments on the latest progress of the project ski jumping center Montafon: "The Financing is done, the building decision was made. We are well on track." The construction of the ski jumping facility shall be staged from March 2013 to January 2014, the official beginning of operation and first competitions could be organized in February 2014.
The costs for the new ski jumping hills at Montafon are assessed with 11.97 million Euros over four years. The state of Vorarlberg, the Austrian government, the Montafon region and Illwerke AG of Vorarlberg are contributing to the financing.
The new ski jumping facility at Tschagguns will include four differently sized ski jumps that can be used all over the year:
- The largest ski jump is a normal hill (Hill Size 108 meters) which is suitable for international competitions, additionally there will be three junior hills of HS 66, HS 40 and HS 22.
- Both larger hills will be equipped with all-year-round inrun tracks (ice / ceramics).
- Due to the topography it is possible to adapt the terrain and build the hills directly onto the natural slopes. No inrun towers need to be constructed.
- Beside the largest hill a fully automatic inclined elevator with an intermediate station near the take-off and a final station at the starting house will lift up the jumpers.
- Inside the functional building beside the outrun area all necessary facilities will be located (race office, speaker booth, preparation rooms, changing and restrooms). During ski jumping events the majority of spectators can find space on the rooftop terrace of that building.
- Floodlights and inrun track lighting necessary for ski jumpig events in the evening won't be installed yet. But the foundations for lamp postsand other installation are planned already, in order to make a later equipement as easy as possible.
The architectural competition for the design of the ski jumping center Montafon was won by Bludenz-based Mitiska-Wäger office.

Further ski jumping hill project at Bregenzerwald
The "Nordic Concept Vorarlberg" also includes the construction of further skiing facilities in Vorarlberg in order to support new blood in nordic skiing. Since summer 2008 the construction of plastic covered ski jumping hills K55, K33 and K18 had been planned at Grebauer Moos in Bezau, but due to conflicts about the properties necessary for the construction of an access road it had to be given up finally in fall 2011.
Instead Andelsbuch has been confirmed as a new location at Bregenzerwald in April 2012. The city council of Andelsbuch agreed to the construction of the three junior hills at the location of former Wälderschanze in Unterbezegg. The Skiklub Bregenzerwald even collected the agreements of the local property owners. The total cost for this ski jumping hill project, including belt-conveyor, judges tower and functional building will be around 2.5 million Euro.
