History:

The construction of the first ski jumping hill at the steep slope of Big Sioux River near Canton was done after skiing demonstrations of a Norwegian guy called Holter had fascinated students at Augustana College of Canton in 1911.
Afterwards founded Sioux Valley Ski Club later enlarged the ski jumping hill and for the three U.S. championships held in 1925, 1930 and 1935 thousands of spectators travelled there by excursion trains from Minneapolis, Denver and Chicago. The ski jump facility had an 18 m high inrun tower and with a total height difference of more than 80 meters it was the largest ski jump of whole South Dakota in these times, to which huge amounts of spectators came even for annual regional competitions. During U.S. Olympic Trials in 1932 Sverre Fretheim set up the hill record of 58 meters. For a competition in the snow-lacking winter 1937 many efforts were made to carry snow from Lake Okoboji to the hill, but then warm winds turned this snow into mud which became iced up-coming frost. Finally the competition had to be cancelled and financial losses of Sioux Ski Club caused the very end of ski jumping competitions. The inrun tower was crashed by a windstorm in 1944 and today only a road sign reminds of the former ski jumping hill.
