History:

The Zermatt Ski Club, founded in 1908, built the Steinmattschanze near the church in 1921. In addition to the large Kayschanze, which was built in 1926, also there numerous competitions were held, where initially jumps over 30 meters were possible. The international student competitions were held on the Steinmattschanze in March 1946. On New Year's Day 1951, the night jumping event took place for the first time. In the 1950s, these night competitions on the hill that had been enlarged to K40, in which the Swiss elite jumpers often took part, attracted thousands of spectators. In 1960 this tradition came to an abrupt end when the ski jump was torn down and the area was built on.
