History:

Ski jumping activities at Rovaniemi had started in February 1927 by building a first jumping hill at Ounasvaara. That hill became quickly too small and the project "Large hill" was initiated.
The construction of a new 70 meter ski jump at the location of Pöyliövaara in the south of Rovaniemi began in 1935. At the opening competition on 1937-03-29 Timo Murama jumped the longest distance with 71 meters and in 1941 Lauri Pietikäinen improved the hill record on 74 m. Although the ski jump was quiet prone to wind, distances of nearly 80 meters were jumped there, making it Finland's largest hill of that time.
On 1944-08-10 the wooden ski jump, was destroyed during the Lapland War, when it was used as a air surveillance tower. After World War II Ounasvaaran Hiihtoseura moved its ski jumping business back to Ounasvaara.
