History:

The first Winter Sports Carnival at Brattleboro in Vermont was organized by Fred Harris in February 1921. After that Harris initiated and sponsored the construction of the ski jumping hill at Cedar Street with $2200. The inauguration was held with Vermont state championships on February 4, 1922 and attended by around 2500 spectators. First hill record holder became Bing Anderson with 158 feet (48.2 m). Then Harris founded Brattleboro Outing Club for the maintenance of the ski jump.
For a first time US-American ski jumping championships were held at Brattleboro in 1924. For the fifth US championships at Brattleboro in 1951 a record crowd of 10,000 spectators came to the then dedicated "Harris Hill" ski jump and admired a new hill record of 239 feet (72.8 m) by Art Tokle. Besides numerous regional championships so far 9 American Nationals have been hosted on Harris Hill: 1924, 1929, 1938, 1942, 1951, 1961, 1969, 1975 and 1992. Usually in advance of these big events the ski jumping hill was modernized and enlarged. In particular anew inrun tower was built in 1929, in 1941 the hill profile was completely renewed, in 1949 the take-off was converted, a new inrun and judges' tower were built in 1957, the hill was enlarged in 1974, a snow-making machine installed in 1986, a profound renovation carried out in 1989 and a new judges' tower set up in 2003.
Since the ski jump did no longer confirm standards, in 2003 the "Harris Hill Ski Jump Inc." was founded and in subsequent years 300,000 US$ were collected in order to modernized the K90 ski jumping hill. From 2006 to 2008 a steel-made inrun tower was set up, the landing hill was broadened and the outrun changed. Due to the construction works the 85th Fred Harris Memorial jubilee competition had to be cancelled in 2008, but then in February 2009 the new, all in all US$ 575,000 expensive Harris Hill HS 98 could be inaugurated with a new hill record and 8,300 spectators. So still today the annual "Winter Carnival" is celebrated annually with two ski jumping competitions in February. In 2012 they were even part of FIS Cup for a first time.
