History:

Kiruna is the centre of Swedish iron mining, because north-east of the city the world’s largest resource of magnetic iron is situated at the Kirunavaara mouintain.
Ski jumping was very popular there after World War II with the new-construction of Malmstabacken. In 1962 Norway’s Stenersen jumped a hill record with 67,5 m. After that the ski jumping hill was enlarged into a K70 and equally became Sweden’s most north ski jumping centre. Because of the very snow-secure position many middle-European national teams came here in 1960’s and 70’s for practise courses. In 1982 the hill was set down, because the wooden construction was dilapidated and the hill profile out of date.
Today mainly cross-country skiing is popular at Kiruna.
