History:

Already around 1890 at Bø in Telemark province the first ski jumping competitions were established on Gullbring- and Torstveitbakken. In about 1910 the Skarphedin IL decided to enlarge and improve Gullbringbakken and so a 30 meter jump was developed. With ski jumping becoming more and more popular, further new jumps followed with Åsekollen in 1916, Lifjøllbakken in 1930 and Berglandbakken in 1940.
In 1951 Skarphedin constructed a large 60 meter jumping hill with Sandvollbakken. This one had a 29 meters high inrun tower, but it was very dangerous to jump on it and after some serious accidents it was given up, since nobody dared to jump on it.
In late 1980’s Gullbringbakken then was renovated and ski jumping activities one more time bloomed up in the small town. The very modern ski jumping facility with K40, K30 and K18 even had floodlights, but in end 1990’s the number of active ski jumpers was declining and today the jumping hills are no more used.
Most famous ski jumpers from Bø, who even jumped for their hometown at Olympic Winter Games and World Championships, were Hans Kleppen (Bronze at WSC 1929) and Halvard Espendalen.
