In Oberhof, which is 8 km away of Zella-Mehlis, the first plastic covered hill worldwide was presented to the public at the Thüringenschanze in 1955. An interesting historical aspect is that the first trial jumping on plastic covering invented by Hans Renner was, of course top secret, held on former Regenbergschanze at Zella-Mehlis on October 31, 1954. Still today the plastic covered jumping hills of Hans-Renner-Schanzenanlage at Stachelsrain are used for education of young ski jumpers.
