Already around 1900 there was the first ski jumping hill of Thuringian Forest and a alpine hill at "Küchholzdelle" in "Neuhaus am Rennweg". Even the prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadtand his royal suite shall have come there for skiing.
After World War II Bärenschanze was used for ski jumping and Küchholzdelle only for alpine skiing.
Later on there were the plastic covered hills at Gründle, but they were destroyed in 1999.
