History:
In Thuringian Großbreitenbach ski jumping competitions on small hills at Hirten- and Schenkenswiese and Bugtal were organized after World War I from 1918 onwards.
In 1926 the construction of a larger jumping hill, a sliding track and cross-country trails was proposed, but in the end rejected. Instead a ski jumping hill was set up at Kesselberg by the location group of Thuringian Ski Association in 1930. It was inaugurated with the first winter sports festival of "Kesselschanze" in 1931 and a hill record of 32 meters. Still in the same year a second, a bit smaller ski jumping hill was added by "Arbeiter-Turn- und Sportverein". Both hills were hosting many competitions until end of 1930's.
After World War II the larger Kesselbergschanze was restored in 1948. In 1954 and 1958 the inrun tower was destoryed by storms, but always reconstructed in a bigger fashion. The hill was active until end of 1970's.
The "Pionierschanze" at Grundstal was set up in 1959 and covered with plastic mattings in 1961. It has been out of order for a long time as well.
Today there is no more ski jumping at Großbreitenbach, instead the ski club focuses mainly on biathlon sports, with world-class athlete Andrea Henkel coming from there.
