History:

The antecessor of Aschbergschanze, which was called Curt A. Seydel-Schanze, was set up by "Wintersportverein Aschberg" in 1924. It even included a skiing cabin inside the wooden inrun tower. One of the highlights there wer German ski championships in 1923. In 1933 Norway's Birger Ruud set up a hill record of 52.5 m. Until 1943 many competitions were organized, but then the ski jump dilapidated after World War II.
In 1958 the new Aschbergschanze at Steinbach valley was set up in only 7 months of construction time and completed around Christmas. The official inauguration jump on 55 m was performed by Harry Glass during a heavy snow storm in January 1959 and watched by an audience of 70,000 spectators. In the same year the lift and the spectator traverses, similar to the ones at Holmenkollen, where installed. The inrun was made of armored concrete and 115 m long, the total height difference was at 118 m.
First the jump had a K-Point of 82.5 meters, but after later profile changes in 1984 it was enlarged onto a K-Point of 102 m. The last hill record was set up by ski jumping hero Jens Weißflog in 1985 at 107.5 m.
Many national and international competitions were hosted on Aschbergschanze. For example national championships of GDR were hosted in Klingenthal 14 times and in 1986 the only World Cup event in GDR was staged there. A crowd of 32,000 spectators followed the World Cup premier which was won by Matti Nykänen.
But afterwards the jumping hill dilapidated very fast and the last competition was already organized on February 11, 1989. After that the hill was closed by police. On September 26, 1990 first only the take-off was removed, but on November 7, 1991 even the whole inrun tower was torn down in the course of a reconstruction measure planned already in GDR times. But since only the judge's tower has been kept to remind of the former ski jumping hill.
Since there hasn't been any large hill ski jump in the area of Saxonian Ski Association and so in 2001/2002 the plan came up to rebuild a new Aschbergschanze. But soon the old location was discarded and in October 2003 works on the new Vogtland-Arena at Schwarzberg had started.
At the opposite slope of the landing hill a K35 junior hill was set up for a first time in 1970. In 1997/98 it was reconstructed and two brand-new plastic hills K40 and K25 were set up.
