In 1961 a mighty wooden ski jumping hill was built up in Wembley Stadium at London and due to the great hospitality of Sir Charles Taylor very good equipped teams from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, France, Austria, Italy and West Germany travelled there for the competition on this hill. Total winner was the later Olympic Gold Medal winner of 1964 Veikko Kankkonen (FIN), but the longest distance was reached by Torgeir Brandtzag from Norway with 113 ft (34,5 m). An English team was participating, too, with the jumpers Alex Sykes, Tony Kennaway and Tim Ashburner starting. Syke was the one to stand the longest distance of these three with 90 ft (27,4 m) in his last jump.
These temporary ski jumping hills in sport stadiums were somehow frequent in the past, because already in 1930 these development was created in the U.S., but the show was always much more important than the value sports in these tournaments.
