Engelberg ski jump modernized - illuminated inrun track

Gross-Titlisschanze in Engelberg has been modernized during this year for 2.7 million Euros. The enlarged HS 140 hill now has a unique LED-illuminated inrun track for night competitions.
The largest ski jumping hill of Switzerland, Gross-Titlis-Schanze in Engelberg, has been modernized since spring for 2.7 million Euros. Works, which had been planned since 2013 and started in March, were completed recently, well in time for the up-coming World Cup season. The last renovation of the 1971 built ski jump had taken place in 2000.
Main focus of the conversion works was the re-alignment of the take-off, which was moved 4 meters back and 2 meters higher, thus flattening the flight curve of ski jumpers according to FIS requirements and making the hill safer. Furthermore, the measure will lead to longer flights - the hill size is increasing from 137 to 140 meters. As part of the modernization, the out-dated wooden inrun was replaced by a concrete structure and small adjustments were made on the landing hill to adapt the new hill profile.
Furthermore, the ski jumping facility was equipped with a new, TV-ready floodlight system, now allowing to host night competitions. A special highlight is the LED lighting of the inrun track by a Slovenian manufacturer, which can not only illuminate the track in different colors, but also trace the position of the jumper along the inrun. This novel innovation will be used for a first time on the weekend before Christmas, when the traditional World Cup event in Engelberg will see its first ever night competition on December 12.
