Ski jumps at Braunlage and Duluth getting dismantled

on 2014-08-23

Deconstruction works on the traditional Wurmbergschanze at Braunlage, Germany, have started. At Duluth in the USA, Chester Bowl Park hills were already dismantled.

Wurmbergschanzen, Braunlage:

Deconstruction of Wurmbergschanze in Braunlage, where first ski jumps were made already in 1922, was decided on already in June. The 1951 built steel inrun tower of the K90 hill, which hosted international competitions up to 2011, is completely stained and cannot be renovated.

About a week ago dismantling works on the landmark of Harz mountains has started and shall be take a total of two weeks. Since a radio antenna and a viewing platform were located on the tip of the 30 meter high tower, these have to be carried out step by step. Next year a new tower with antenna and viewing point shall be build - but Wurmbergschanze is probably going to be history.

Chester Bowl Park, Duluth:

Also Duluth in Minnesota is facing a long-lasting ski jumping history. Already in 1905 Duluth Ski Club was founded and soon Chester Bowl Park was picked as ski jumping site. In 1940 a large K88 ski jumping hill was built there, since 1971 there were also three junior hills, which developed many good young jumpers over the years, but also hadn't been used anymore in the past decade.

After the hills had been dilapidating over all these years, the city of Duluth now decided to dismantle the hills for security and liabilty reasons, since a renovation for around 1 million dollars was not worth it. Last Monday first demolition excavators came to destroy the inrun towers made from steel and wood. Thus in Duluth an almost 100-year-long ski jumping history comes to an end.
