World Cup opening 2013 in the Warsaw stadium?

on 2012-10-02

In Poland there are currently plans to bring the ski jumping World Cup into the National Stadium of Warsaw. FIS Race Director Walter Hofer considers a World Cup opening 2013-2014 there as possible.

Today the spectacular news was published that plans existing to host ski jumping events in the 2012 inaugurated National Stadium of Poland's capitol Warsaw. According to the general secretary of the Polish ski association PZN Gregorz Mikula the idea was developed by the ski association of Tatra TZN and Walter Hofer.

According to skijumping.pl FIS ski jumping committee member Jan Kowal already developed first plans with a hill size somewhere between 65 and 100 meters. FIS Race Director Walter Hofer already got an impression of the site of the opening match of the European football championship 2012 during a visit to Warsaw on September 22.

Walter Hofer confirmed on berkutschi.com: "It fits our plan of extending the winter season for one or two weekends. In this context we are looking for possibilities to have an earlier season opening. For that we, of course, need the right infrastructure because World Cup also means snow. Technical upgrading is possible in order to implement such an event at that time."

He added: "The main thing is that two aspects remain unaffected. First, this is the sporting value and that is connected to a certain hill size. And second: When it wants to be included in the World Cup series it is not that important where it takes place, but that it takes place on snow."

The idea of bringing ski jumping into the metropolis is a rather old one. Already decades ago, long time before the world cup was introduced, temporary ski jumping hills were set up in sports stadiums. The big arenas of Chicago (1937, 1954), Tokio (1938, 1939, 1950), Portland (1953), Vancouver (1958) and London (1961) have already been host to such jumping events. Even in Warsaw there were once two ski jumping hills, which can both not be used anymore.

Schnapsidee

Welch eine Schnapsidee !
Die sollten lieber mal alte Schanzen wie Cortina,Calgary oder
Sarajewo wieder flott machen.
