Conversion of Schattenberg stadium in Oberstdorf

Oberstdorf is getting ready for the Nordic WSC 2005:
In winter 2005 Oberstdorf in the Allgaeu is going to host the Nordic World Ski Championships and before this main event the sports facilities are converted and modernized.

Beside the cross-country stadium in Ried also the ski jumping hills at Schattenberg are modernized and enlarged. Already before the Four Hills Tournament 2002 a new foodpath from the town center to the ski stadium was built. Additionally the spots for TV cameras were installed and new garages set up.

Since spring the ski stadium at Schattenberg which is home to 5 ski jumping hills from large to small scale, is extended with new functional buildings with integrated spectator stands and further grand stands in the north-eastern part of the stadium. At large Schattenbergschanze a jumpers house, a garage and a snow-making system in the take-off area are installed, so that ski jumpers and Nordic combined can find their world champions even with high temperatures.

The additional spectator stands shall enlarge the capacity of Schattenberg stadium from now 18,000 to 28,000, already including the landing zone of the smaller hill that can be used during some events. During ski jumping competitions 24,000 fans can cheer for their idols.

The most important means of construction is of course the enlargement of the large hill from K115 to K120. It will then make jumps arond 140 meters possible. For summer ski jumping, including training and competitions, the new hills will be covered with plastic mattings. Additionally floodlights and a screwed lift are installed and improvements for TV and media infrastructure are done.

The total cost for conversion works will be around 23m Euros. For the modernization of Schattenberg ski stadium 16.7m are taken into account, while the remaining 6.3m Euros are consumed by the new-construction of Ried cross-country stadium. Financing by country, state and district funds, as well as Oberstdorf municipality is secured already.
